"All my designs are essentially paintings about colour, shape and space. A certain style of painting may more readily be translated into a needlepoint or a printed piece but the "painting"always comes first. What I aim for with these paintings/rugs/wall hangings is to make something that works visually but carries layers of meaning. There must be something more lasting than pure decoration. Rugs are basically two-dimensional. In many ways they are like drawings for floors but one does need to consider that they will be seen from every angle; which makes creating a dynamic within the parameters more of a challenge than when one is designing for the wall. However, what is really important to me is to make something that works visually but also performs a function."
